An Enemy for Every Prophet, and the Greatest Miracle

And then, to console the Prophet (peace be upon him), Allah says:

For every prophet there must be certain enemies — We have appointed for every prophet enemies who are shayāṭīn al-ins: the friends of Shayṭān, the devils among men; wa-l-jinn, and from the jinn. And they communicate one with another and pass their information about — zukhruf al-qawli ghurūrā: deceptively, in embellished speech. And had Allah willed, they would not have done so. Let them go on with it; that is their work. Let them go on; and do your own. Those who are good will, in shāʾ Allāh, accept your message.

Allah (swt) then says: do not be troubled by their mockery, their sarcasm and their criticism. And there is no need to send another muʿjizah: the Qur'an is the greatest muʿjizah, and greatest for them in particular. It is the greatest miracle for them because those people were the people of this language. They were the people of this language; they understood it; they valued it; and it overwhelmed them upon many occasions. Some of them — arch-enemies — would go to listen to what the Prophet (peace be upon him) was reciting and could not tear themselves away. They were overcome; for when a thing is of such power, a man is simply overcome by it. And when such a one returned — when the enemy, whoever he was, returned — his companions would look into his face and say ṣabaʾta: have you left the dīn? Have you left our faith? For the Qur'an, and especially for the people of the language, is overwhelming. That is the greatest muʿjizah we possess. That is the greatest.
