Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ's Last Message

Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ, one of the leaders of the Anṣār — the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wanted to know what had happened to him, so he said, "Who will find out for me what became of Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ, whether he is alive or dead?" One of the Anṣār went looking for him, and found Saʿd in his last moments. He told him the Messenger of Allah had sent him to see how he was. Saʿd said — and these are the words of one of the leaders of the Anṣār, dying because of the refuge he had given the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) — "I am among the dead; inform the Messenger of Allah of this. Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ says to you: may Allah reward you on our account better than He ever rewarded any prophet on account of his nation. And greet your people from me, and tell them: Saʿd ibn al-Rabīʿ says to you — you will find no excuse with Allah if harm comes to your Prophet while you still have one eye to blink."

The man returned to give the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) this message, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told him: if you find him alive, give him my salām. So the man went to Saʿd and said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) delivers his salām to you." These were his last words in this world: he was giving the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) a message, and giving his own people a message — asking Allah to reward the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) better than He rewarded any other prophet, even though it was because of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that he was now dying. Compare this to these Muslims of today who are so stingy, unwilling to give up their lives or their wealth for Allah, Mighty and Majestic — these Anṣār had their lives wrecked, their business going down, their farms untended, their families suffering, their entire livelihood upside down, because of giving refuge to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and the Muslims. And still Saʿd was saying: reward him, give him the best reward You would ever give a prophet of Allah. And he told his people, who were already dying in the battle, that they would find no excuse with Allah if harm came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) while they still had life in them — any pain the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) felt while they were still alive, they were to blame. These are the Anṣār who gave victory to the religion of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Thereupon he died, may Allah be pleased with him.
