The Madinan Period II, Part 11: After the Conquest — Bilāl's Adhān, Banū Jadhīmah, and the End of the Hijrah

Section 9 of 12 · The Life of the Prophet Muhammad: The Madinan Period, Part Two

Nineteen Days

Some of the aḥkām of Fatḥ Makkah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stayed eighteen days — and in one narration nineteen days — and during this period he did not fast, and he shortened the ṣalāh. Therefore, for example, in the Shāfiʿī madhhab and among some of the other scholars, the ruling has been taken from this that the traveller can shorten the ṣalāh and break the fast for eighteen days, because of this narration, which is in al-Bukhārī (4298). Obviously there is a difference of opinion: some of them say three days, and here eighteen days; and then there is Ibn Taymiyyah, for example, who says that as long as one is customarily considered a traveller, one can break the fast and shorten the ṣalāh.
