Aqida Tahawiyya, Lesson 2: Two Schools and the Oneness of Allah

Section 22 of 27 · Aqeedah · Mufti Abdul Rahman Mangera

Walking in the Rain or Staying at Home

The point is that the possibility exists. Even in that kind of set-up, where someone might say that there could be two gods who agree to agree and not to disagree, the mere possibility exists of their disagreeing, because each of them is a god with the ability and power to do anything he wants. That mere possibility precludes the possibility of two gods, precisely because the possibility exists. They have agreed not to disagree; but the possibility exists that one of them wants to make that man walk in the rain today, while the other says no, no, no: he wants to leave him at home.

Only one of these is going to come into being, into existence. They cannot both come into existence, a man who is walking in the rain and also staying at home, because that is two opposites coming together, which for any discerning person is an impossibility, and is inconceivable. So the only other outcome is that just one comes about: he is going to be walking in the rain, or he is going to be at home. Whichever will succeeds, the other god is rendered powerless, and is not very godly anymore.

The point is that this is a proof of the oneness of Allah (swt): the mere fact that there is no chaos in the world. Yes, there are ozone problems and things like that; someone might think that there is, after all, a greenhouse problem. That is a man-made problem. That is abuse and ẓulm that the human being is committing, taking the universe out of its balance.

وَٱلسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ ٱلْمِيزَانَ

“He raised the sky high, and has placed the scale,” (55:7)

Allah (swt) said: wa waḍaʿa al-mīzān. Allah put and established the balance, and we are trying to take it out of that. Every sin we commit is taking the world out of balance. Eventually, it has an effect on the grand scheme of things.

“Allah has not taken a son to Himself, nor was there any god with Him. Had there been so, every god would have taken away what he created, and each one of them would have been aggressive against the other. Pure is Allah from what they describe.” (23:91)

Allah says: wa la-ʿalā baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍ. Had there been more gods, each one would try to transgress over the others; and that is not a very good system. We see this calmness in the system.
